Col Bent NS 1920’s Scarlets

LCol C. E. Bent, DSO in Dress Scarlets at his home in Paradise NS, 1920’s

A 3.5 inch by 5 inch sepia of LCol Bent in his Scarlet uniform. Most likely posing in his backyard for a photograph. The Full Dress Scarlet was the first uniform of the 48th Highlanders, adopted in 1892, the year after the regiment’s founding. The current active regiment continues to wear full dress on ceremonial parades, one of a few Canadian regiments to continue to do so. LCol Bent was Commanding Officer of the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders) from 1916 to 1919.

The scarlet tunic is a military garment used widely, though not exclusively worn, by most regiments of the British Army, Royal Marines, and some colonial units within the British Empire, from the 17th to the 20th centuries.[1] The scarlet tunic continues to be used into the 21st century, with several armed forces of the Commonwealth of Nations adopting them as their full dress and mess dress uniforms.
