Front face of an Army Form A2042 postcard sent home by Pte Tomalin on April 29, 1915.

Field Service Post Card – Army Form A2042 – Pte. Harry Tomalin

A yellow-brown rectangular paper card with a templated form printed on the back, and was one of the first widespread government forms, as this type of document is regarded today, being a templated document with limited spaces for specific information only to be written and pre-determined options to be selected. On the front of the letter is printed at the top left: “A.F.A. 2042   114/Gen. No./5248”, and in the top centre is printed: “Field Service Post Card”, with a royal seal in the middle, signifying this was a government document and to be treated with higher priority and care. Below this is printed on the left: “The address only to be written on this side. If anything else is added, the post card will be destroyed.”. To the right of this text is a dark black vertical line to divide the space, and further right is a blank space and is written in pencil by Pte Tomalin the receiving information for his family, whom this post card was being sent to, and says: “MISS A TOMALIN   208 Waverly Road   Kew Beach   Toronto Canada”. A number of stamps are on the front right side of the post card: a military Field Post Office 3.X stamp from April 30 – 1915, and two green one cent postage stamps attached to the top right corner featuring an image of King George V, with both partially scratched with pencil.

On the back of the post card is the pre-printed template as follows, from top to bottom: “NOTHING is to be written on this side except the date and signature of the sender.    Sentences not required may be erased.    If anything else is added the post card will be destroyed.    ——-   I am quite well.    I have been admitted into hospital. {  Sick  Wounded  }  and am going on well.   and hope to be discharged soon.    I am being sent down to the base.   I have received your  {  letter dated ____   telegram ,, ____   parcel ,, ____    Letter follows at first opportunity.    I have received no letter from you. {  lately.  for a long time.   Signature only. }   Date ____   [Postage must be prepaid on any letter or post card addressed to the sender of this card.]” In the space next to the words “Signature only” has written in pencil: “Pte H Tomalin.” and on the line next to the word “Date” is written in pencil: “April 29th” At the bottom left is printed the government item designation “(9625)  Wt. W3497-293   1760m.  3/15  G.A.T”, and “G.A.T” was likely the printing company of this post card. Many of the lines of text on the template have been crossed out with pencil, as can be seen in the attached image, and the remaining text forms the message: “I am quite well. I have received your letter. Letter follows at first opportunity.”
