Divisional Sports Meet Medal – August 1917 – Pte Ewart Gray

Round brown metal medal, possibly bronze, with a small metal key ring hooked on top, on the front centre is an image of a weight and the top half of the medal front above the weight has the words: “SOMEWHERE IN FRANCE”, and the bottom half of the medal front below the weight has the words: “DIVISIONAL SPORTS AUGUST 1917”, the back of the medal in the centre has the words: “BOXING SECOND WON BY” and carved into the back of the medal below this is the name: “EWART GRAY“, with lines scratched under Gray.

Pte Ewart Gray, by his attestation papers, served in WW1 with the 2nd Canadian Railway Construction Battalion(later #2 CRT) from June 22nd 1917 until January 24th 1919, but also wrote that he had prior service with the 48th Highlanders. Additionally, Pte Gray wrote that he had previously applied but was rejected from service due to “Stammering in speech”.
