Carrying Party 1917

A 6 inch by 8 inch party carrying rifles, grenades, water bottles and Lewis ammo. Mounted with green matte and wooden frame.

During the night, company supply wagons move up from quartermaster stores with food and charcoal in sandbags and water for canteens, dixies or camp kettles. For the trenches, they bring barbed wire, frames and sandbags. Here the fatigue party is carrying supplies picked up from the wagons. Note the rifle grenades and wire cutters on their rifles, extra water bottles and Lewis gun ammunition carriers. Both sides tended to lower sniping around eight o’clock for food resupply. When they didn’t the men had to struggle forward under total darkness.
