Bridge vidersion built under shell fire by the 3rd Field Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers south of San Leonardo, Italy on 18 December 1943. They named it by a sign “Chit House Crossing”. The crossing was on the advance to Ortona and the gully, south of Ortona, was used by the Germans as a major defensive position on the north side. “The Gully” (which was named by the Canadians as a Battle Honour) took the Canadians several days to cross successfully.
