History of Pipes and Drums of the 48th Highlanders of Canada
The Pipes and Drums of the 48th Highlanders came into existence with the Regiment in 1891. The band is an integral part of the Regiment and the members of the unit have never fought in any war theater without the music of its own pipers.
The Pipe Band is one of the oldest and finest in North America. It is the largest military band in Canada and has a strength, including the recently formed junior band, of over sixty members. The members of the group range in age from juniors of eight to senior members of 60.
The band has appeared quite extensively on the international scene in the 1980’s and has performed at concerts in London, England, and in many U.S. cities including Boston and Philadelphia. A recent extended tour of the Netherlands was especially successful. In addition, the band has recently re-entered the competition field with entries in grade two, three, and four. Last year, in addition to its heavy performance commitments, the Grade Two Band won the North American Championship at the prestigious Maxwell Highland Games. The Pipes and Drums are under the direction of Pipe Major Alexander “Sandy” Dewar and Drum Major Larry Fullerton. They perform with the permission of the present Lt. Col. John Sandham.
