1st Battalion Sergeants” Mess Dinner, 8 Jul 44 Italy held at Piedmonte d’Aliffe where the 1st Battalion was on rest and recovery after their successful and unassisted breaching of the Hitler Line defences on 22/23 June 1944. They were the first Canadian Battalion to break the German’s vaunted line.

Signed in ink by LCol D. Mackenzie & RSM Tiny Small. Mackenzie was Second-in-Command for the Hitler Line personally directing the supporting artillery fire in the absence of a FOO (Forward Observation Officer) from the artillery. Following the battle LCol Ian Johnston was promoted to Brigadier of 11 Brigade and Mackenzie was promoted to command the 48th Highlanders.
