History of The 48th Highlanders of Canada

The 48th Highlanders were formed in 1891 as a result of the spirit and dedication of a determined group of Scottish Canadians who prevailed in the face of official apathy.

Officially gazetted on Oct. 16th, it adopted the Davidson tartan and Falcon’s Head Crest from respect for its first Commanding Officer, LCOL, John I. Davidson. Its Regimental March was designated as Hielan’ Laddie and dress as Full Highland Scarlet with Feather Bonnet. It soon became allied with one of Britian’s great Regiments, the Gordon Highlanders, and received its first baptism of fire and Battle Honour in South Africa, in 1899-1900.

During the Great War the Regiment supplied three fully active battalions, an additional battalion of drafts and a great service record. In all, 21 Battle Honours  were won.

The Regiment was once again one of the first to mobile when war was declared in 1939. In the years to follow, the 48th served with the distinction and valour which had become its hallmarks, winning another 27 Battle Honours.

These honours are an eternal memorial to the 84 Officers and 1,699 non-commissioned officers and men who gave their lives in the Two World Wars. “Dileas Gu Brath” – Faithful Forever – is our pledge to the Regiment and Canada.
