NOK: Mother – Clara Redfearn, Hornsea, Yorkshire, England.
After the war he enlisted with the 48th Highlanders (militia) in Toronto on 16 March 1921. He was promoted to L/Cpl on 4 November 1921 and to Staff Sergeant on 5 October 1923. He was discharged on 6 May 1931. The family recalls he was working in a training role during WW2 and retired as a “Major”. Several 48th Highlander veterans of WWI acted as trainers while with the 2nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders in Toronto during the war as new recruits enlisted for overseas duty. Not all of the WWI veterans who did this were re-enrolled in the army but did it as volunteers. It would make sense that he would have been given the rank of Company Sergeant Major, one rank higher than his rank of Staff Sergeant that he held on retirement in 1931.
