Clarence Edward Wedgewood was a member of the 48th Highlanders (Reserve Militia battalion) before the war. He, along with about 2/3 of the battalion, stepped forward in the first week of September 1939 to be enlisted for overseas duty. B72581 Wedgewood, C E enlisted on 4 September 1939 with the 48th Highlanders for overseas duty with the 1st Battalion and was assigned to D Company. Following training, mostly at the CNE Grounds in Toronto, he travelled with the battalion by CN train to Halifax embarking there on 18 December 1939 on the Reina del Pacifico, landing in Gourock Scotland on the 31st. His date of birth was 9 August 1902 in Carleton Place, Ontario and his religion United Church. He remained with the 1st Battalion in England and would have participated in the brief foray into France in June 1940. He was promoted Corporal on 23 June 1943.
Part 2 Orders attached to the War Diary of July 1943 list NOK for the entire battalion and Wedgewood is included. However, he is not included in the same Part 2 Order of the embarkment list of HM Troopship Derbyshire in Gourock, Scotland of 28 June which left for the 9 July landings at Pachino Sicily. (Research required to determine whether his name was missed on the embarkment list, or he was assigned to remain in England as a future replacement for casualties, or was sent to another unit or role.)
