Pte Stewart, Daniel Ferguson

Daniel Ferguson Stewart attested in Toronto with the 48th Highlanders (Reserve Battalion) on 24 July 1917, was given the service number 2393487 and assigned to Company 3.  He gave his next of kin as his mother Helen Stewart at 577 South Main Street, Manchester, New Hampshire USA. His father was Thomas.

Once overseas he was taken on strength of the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders) on 30 March 1918 and arrived in the field on 8 August. He was with the battalion to the end of the war and for the period of occupation of Germany. He returned to England with the battalion and embarked on the SS Baltic from Liverpool. They arrived in Toronto on 9 May 1919, and he was discharged on 10 May 1919.

He died on 10 February 1920 at the age of 25 just weeks before his 26th birthday.

He would have been entitled to 2 medals, The Victory Medal and the British War Medal. After his death his widow received the Silver Memorial Cross as his death was deemed due to service.

He would have participated in the following battles: The Crow’s Nest at the Drocourt-Queant Line (1 September) and Canal du Nord (27 September).
