PTE. SANDERS, Melvin Clyde

Melvin Clyde Sanders enlisted at No. 2 District Depot, Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and was given the service number B88003. He transferred to the 48th Highlanders in Toronto and went by train to Halifax where he embarked on 12 May 1940 for overseas, arriving in Liverpool on 22 May. Our records don’t show the date he joined the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders who were training in Aldershot. He could have stayed some days in England with the 48th Highlanders Holding Unit until a vacancy arose in the 1st Battalion. However, on 4 December he was at the battalion and was sent to hospital at 9 Field Ambulance. He returned to the battalion on 23 April 1941 and was assigned to D Company. On 29 May 1941 he was granted Leave of Absence (Free Warrant).

Our records don’t show him again. He was not on the Sailing List in June 1943 when the battalion departed from Gourock Scotland for the landing at Pachino, Sicily on 10 July 1943. (more research required)
