1090328 Pte Ross, Donald attested on 19 February 1917 with the 253rd Queen’s University Highlanders Battalion. Once in England he was with the 5th Reserve Battalion, spending some time in Hospital, then was sent to the 15th Battalion, 48th Highlanders arriving on 25 November 1917. When arriving at the battalion he was sent immediately to CCRC (hospital) and remained away from the battalion until 2 March 1918. Once back the battalion was largely at “Stand to” or in support (2-6 Mar St Pierre Switch; 7 to 12 Mar the trenches in St Emile Sector; 13th 29th out of line; 30th to mid April in Arras area.)
On 20 April 1918 he was quarantined, returning to the battalion on 18 May. He remained with the battalion until 24 February 1919 when he was sent to Hospital in Witley Camp, England with the influenza. During this last period with the battalion, he was in the battles of Amiens, Drocourt- Queant Line (Crow’s Nest) and Canal du Nord. He was on a 14 day leave from 5 to 14 November when he came back to the unit with the flu. He was discharged in Canada on 25 April 1919
