Member of 48th Regiment “Highlanders” who volunteered to go to South Africa in 1900, Canada’s first official war since Confederation.

the number was restricted for the first contingent and the following 48th Highlanders were allowed to go:

“A” company – Col. Sgt A.R. MacGregor, Cpl. J.A. Smith, Ptes. Whitehead, Weller, Mitchell and MacPherson

“B” Company – Pte. J.D. Spence

“C” Company – Ptes. G.M. Smith, Hornibrook

“D” Company – Ptes. A.C, MacKenzie, McNish

“E” Company – Sgt. W.H. Grant

“G” Company – Col.Sgt. Lorsh, Ptes. Dunham, Blain

“H” Company – Cpls. Hopeson, Banton, Ptes. Baldwin and Morley
