Alexander Thomas Marshment - post war

PTE. MARSHMENT, Alexander Thomas

Alexander Thomas Marshment enlisted with the 48th Highlanders in Toronto, likely in September 1939, and received the service number B73004.  With the battalion he trained, mostly on the CNE Grounds with barracks in the Horse Palace. On 18 December 1939 the battalion left Toronto on a CN train bound for Halifax where they embarked on the Reina del Pacifico, as part of the convoy carrying the 1st Canadian contingent to the UK. They disembarked at Gourock on the Clyde on 31 December and travelled by train to Corunna Barracks in Aldershot arriving New Year’s Day.

He is not listed on subsequent records. Service records required. His granddaughter stated that “The 48th Highlanders were a really important part of his life. Among his very small amount of possessions that I have from when he passed, in his wallet were about 10 paper membership cards from the 48th Highlanders.” This would be membership in the Old Comrades Association after the war.
