On 22 May 1044 the 48th Highlanders of Canada made a bridgehead in the ADOLF HITHER line near PONTECORVO (MR 7217).  “A” Coy broke out of the bridgehead (MR 731157) towards the high ground overlooking it. Throughout the whole day this area was subjected to very heavy shelling, mortaring and machine gun fire.  B75192 Pte Alfred GLENDENNING, who was a stretcher bearer attached to “A” Coy was busy evacuating casualties.  Owing to the nature of the undergrowth, casualties left laying around were apt not to be found by carrying parties.  On four occasions he personally carried out casualties a distance of there to four hundred yards over ground covered by enemy fire.  Twice he carried the casualties on his back and twice he carried them with an aid of another man. On each occasion after having carried the casualty to safety he immediately rejoined his platoon by the same fire-swept route. He continually exposed himself to enemy fire in order to tend casualties, and by his great courage and devotion to duty he was an inspiration to all those with whom he came into contact.
