Pte Maurice Edwards

Pte Edwards. Maurice

Maurice Seymour Edwards enlisted on 15 October 1943 and was given the Service Number B108685. He was born 05 May 1916.

Our records do not show him with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders during the war, Italy or Holland. He was overseas with another unit. However, on 18 May 1945 he was taken on strength of the 1st Bn, 48th Highlanders. At that time, with the war having ended on 7 May, the battalion was in Holland, at The Hague. The battalion had been given the task of being gaolers to the German SS troops. They had the Germans build their own prison camp and the battalion prepared the Germans for their return to Germany, all the time guarding the camp to prevent the Dutch underground from killing the Germans. They left The Hague that month for the town of Soest, near Apeldoorn which they had liberated on 17 April. During the time at Soest many of the battalion were sent home to Canada and other Canadian soldiers arrived at the battalion to return home to Canada with the battalion. Pte Edwards was one of those new Highlanders. On 19 July 1945 he was struck off strength of the battalion and sent to 13 CBR (Canadian Base Reinforcement). He did not return home with the 48th.
