PTE Dicks, Charles William Joseph

B/73914 Pte Dicks, Charles William Joseph attested 1 Feb 1940, trained at the 48th Highlanders Depot at Camp Borden from 12 Feb 1940 to 06 June 1940  and departed for overseas duty on 2 Aug 1940. He was taken on strength of the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders of Canada on 05 December 1941 having completed a course as Shoemaker Class III. Pte Dicks was killed in action on 18 July 1943  during the attack to take the town of Valguarnera, Sicily. Records show his battlefield burial as “near Valguarnera, Sicily, 100 yards from High tension wires between 2 large rocks. MR [map reference] 321735”.

Prior to the war Dicks had spent 6 months with the 1st Battalion, Calgary Highlanders, No. 1129, from 15 May 1935 then a short time with the 1st Battalion The Vancouver Regiment, No. 1083,  from 12 Nov 1935.

Wife: Mrs Ella May Dicks, Listowel, Ontario, married 20 April 1940. After his death in 1943, his wife subsequently remarried. Mrs. Ella James also in Listowel.
