Conrad, Albert Ross enlisted in the regular army for overseas duty and was given the Service Number F76244 at #6 District Depot, NRMA to Active.
Part 2 Records, attached to the War Diaries of January, May and June 1944 show:
. On 30 January 1944 he was Struck Off strength of the 48th Highlanders 1st Battalion to the 48th Highlanders X-3 List on admission to hospital with a Shrapnel wound to the left upper leg. The X-3 list are those soldiers in theatre sent to hospital. This shows that he had been with the 1st Battalion in Italy and went to hospital after the battle to the west of Ortona (23 December to 30 December 1943). In January the battalion was in a defensive position at the Arielli River astride the Tollo Road in front of Villa Grande doing aggressive patrols into the German lines to disrupt their actions and determine their strength and placement.
. On 25 May 1944 he was Taken on Strength from the 48th Highlanders X-4 list, returning to the battalion following recuperation. (The X-4 list is Highlanders held in reserve as reinforcements). The battalion at that time had just breached the Adolph Hitler Line at Pontecorvo on 22/23 and were at rest at Piedmonte d’Alife when Pte Ross rejoined the battalion.
. On 11 June 1944 he was awarded the CVSM and clasp as shown in orders of June. (Canadian Volunteer Service Medal)
Family recollections indicate he was taken prisoner of war. (research required.)
