Pte BLACK, John Irving

192447 Private John Black was a 28 year old fireman originally from Cumberland, England. He was employed at Eaton’s when he attested into the 92nd Battalion in August 1915 at Toronto, ON. He was sent as reinforcement to the 15th Battalion in March 1916 and assigned to No. 1 Company.

During the battle of Mont Sorel in June he suffered a serious gun shot wound to his left thigh which also fractured his femur.  Private Black was evacuated and initially treated at No. 12 General Hospital, Boulogne before being sent to the UK. He had a very long period of hospitalization first at Dover Military Hospital and then at Shorncliffe. Despite an initial recovery, his condition worsened and he died of his wounds on June 24, 1917. Private Black is buried in Whitehaven Cemetery.
