Killed in action during the advance and mopping up from Cemetery Hill near San Leonardo, Italy where the battalion on the night of 23/24 December had penetrated 1.2 km behind the German lines, undetected, and fought a three day battle. The successful battle threatened the only road in and out of Ortona that the Germans could use for resupply or withdrawal. The Germans withdrew from Ortona as the mopping up advance began.
