Private George Griffin was born in the town of Dudley, Worcestershire, England on September 29, 1885. He had immigrated to Canada and was a stove polisher before attesting with the 48th Highlanders in the 15th Battalion on September 20, 1914. He was described as being about 5.5″ in height with grey eyes, light brown hair, and “speckled all over body”. While serving overseas in France, he interestingly notes down two very different locations as his latest address and contacts, one likely being his parents noted as Mrs. William Griffin at 10 Wellington Road in his birth place of Dudley, Worcestershire, England, and the other being Meadows in Brown Coal Mine (now Yallourn North), Victoria, Australia.
Private Griffin served in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces until he was demobilized in England in March 1919. During his years of service, he was hospitalized at various times for injuries and illnesses, such as tonsilitis and a sprained leg. He also served as his companies cook for periods of time from late 1914 to early 1915.
