Everett, James A. Pte 27888 No 3 Coy POW

Private EVERETT, JAMES ALEXANDER

27888 Pte James Alexander Everett attested at Valcartier, Quebec on 22 September 1914 with the 15th Battalion, 48th Highlanders and was assigned to No. 3 Company. He gave his date of birth as 8 Sept 1897 at Walham Green, England. He sailed with the battalion and the 1st Canadian Expeditionary Force on 3 October from Quebec City. In England, the battalion was made part of the 3rd Brigade. Following training at Salisbury Plain they sailed to France to St. Nazaire and were in the trenches by 6 March near Armentieres. The battalion moved to Ypres, arriving 15 April 1915. At this time Pte Everett was in Company G and was a qualified signaller. He was captured during the first chlorine gas attack of the war and made a POW 24 April 1915. His first camp was at Gottingen, Germany with a stomach wound. He was transferred to Heilsberg ost Preussen (Prussia), reported unofficially on 25 September and officially on 8 November. He was transferred and interned in Holland on 28 March 1918, then after the Armistice repatriated and sent to England at Witley hospital on 18 November 1918. There he changed the address of his mother to 19 Carling Avenue, Toronto. He left Witley for Canada on 17 February 1919 and was discharged in Canada on 18 March.
