Narrative in Support of Recommendation for the Military Cross – 3-Mar-17:

‘This officer has been attached to the Battalion for 8 months. He has always shown a great disregard for his. personal safety when it was necessary to go out and dress a wounded man. At the Somme when the shelling was of the most intense character, this officer took care of the wounded with the greatest care and undoubtedly saved the lives of many men through his intrepidity at times when he personally was in the greatest danger. Captain Shaw has always been extremely steadfast in his devotion to his duty as a Medical Officer and at all times has shown the greatest keeness in keeping the men well.”

He was wounded March 21st, 1917 by straffing at the Elbe Trench and evacuated.

After the War he then resumed his studies at McGill.and received his CM and DPH. In 1921 he was appointed assistant bacteriologist in the British Columbia Provincial Laboratory and went on to head both the Faculty of Bacteriology at UBC and the Provincial Laboratory. Before retiring in 1950. he was recognized as one of the world’s leaders in his field and. had published a variety of papers – including one for the Edmonton Board of Health on the effective use of Roccal as a disinfectant for beer glasses.  He died in Vancouver in 1970.
