Lieutenant Evan Ryrie was a 21 year old bank worker with pre-war service in the 48th Highlanders when he attested into the 20th Battalion at Sandling camp in May 1915. He was an accomplished athlete and had attended Trinity College School and University College Toronto.
While serving with the 20th Battalion in Belgium in November 1915, he was evacuated with severe appendicitis to No. 3 Canadian General Hospital in Treport and then from there to the UK for surgery. While in the UK he was placed on strength of the 35th Reserve Battalion. Upon discharge in March 1916 a Medical Board recommended he be returned to Canada for more surgery and convalescence. Lieutenant Ryrie returned to the 15th Battalion in November 1916 and served several detached postings to the 1st Entrenching Battalion, the 1st Division Grenade School and the 1st Army School of Instruction before rejoining the battalion in the field at Vimy in May 1917.
He served during the front line tours at Arleux, Mericourt and at Loos where he was killed in action by artillery fire on July 15th while moving forward along a communications trench to the front line trenches during a relief-in-place with the 10th Battalion. Lieutenant Ryrie is buried in Hersin Communal Cemetery Extension.
