Chauncey Douglas Lough enlisted in the 48th Highlanders of Canada in Toronto, arriving in England in 1940. He was with the 1st Battalion, 48th Highlanders in England in 1941 as a Lieutenant. Part 2 Orders to the War Diary of March 1941 he is shown as an increase to the 48th Highlanders on 7 February 1941 “to be seconded”. Although the record does not show from what unit he came to the 1st Battalion it would have been the 48th Highlanders’ Holding Unit in which 48th Highlanders were assigned waiting for a vacancy in the 1st Battalion. He was then Struck Off Strength of the 1st Battalion on 8 February.
The orders attached to the May diary explain this one day in/out action. These orders state: ”Transfers: The undernoted is an extract from CARO overseas – CD Lough to 4 Cdn Recce Bn (4PLDG) – 29 Jan 41”. Doug was one of those Officers and NCOs who volunteered to join the newly formed Recce Battalion, 4 Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. Also named in the order are Major WWG Darling, Capt. WN Hovey and Lt. KL Campbell.
The PLDG were formed on 29 Jan 1941. A full slate of officers was appointed on 14 February, and it included CD Lough. On 23 June, No. 1 Recce Squadron within 4 PLDG was formed at Maida Barracks, Aldershot. In No 1 Squadron No. 3 Troop had the appointments of Lt DC Lough as 2 i/c (Second in Command) with Lt Peter W Bennett in command. 4 PLDG embarked in Gourock Scotland on 16 August 1943 to land at Augusta, Sicily on 27 August, however the PLDG history does not show who was on board so whether Lt Lough was with them to Sicily will require his Service Records. The family believes he was transferred to a staff/intelligence role and may have been the adjutant in that assignment. (tbc)
