Lieutenant WILLIAM HAMILTON SHOENBERGER

Captain WILLIAM HAMILTON SHOENBERGER

He was born on 30 November 1892 in Coburg, Ontario.

He attended Ridley College and graduated from Royal Military College.

Lt Shoenberger attested into the 15th Bn on 19 September 1914 in Valcartier. He was wounded April 30, 1915 near Ypres with a GSW that fractured his right tibia. He was evacuated to Military Hospital, Tidworth on 10 May 1915 and posted to 17th Bn. On 20 July 1915 he was in Canada and posted to the 92nd Bn.

He arrived back in England 29 May 1916 on the Empress of Britain. On 30 May 1916 he was promoted to Captain and on 4 Jan 1917 he was transferred to 5 Reserve Battalion.

On 24 February 1917 he was “brought to notice of the Secretary of State for War for Valuable Services rendered in connection with the war.”

On 8 August 1917 he was back in France. He was seconded for duty with 43 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps from 18 May 1917 until 31 March 1919. We have no particulars of this period of service but he did receive flying pay as an Observer. He was demobilized 1 April 1919.

He died in 1982 at age 89.
