David Munn Dickie

Lieutenant DICKIE, DAVID MUNN (MID)

Killed on May 15, 1944  north of Mignano toward the Gari river while turning his jeep around while on a reconnaissance of the start line for the attack up the Liri Valley toward the Hitler Line, south of Pontecorvo, Italy and overlooked by the Germans on Monte Cassino. Also wounded was Major George Renison, a 48th Highlander, at that time the G-2 of the 1st Canadian Division. Lt Dickie had just recently joined 1st Division HQ from the regiment. He is buried in the Cassino War Cemetery, Italy(V.C. 21)

Lt. Dickie, an ex Balmy Beach halfback was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 48th Highlanders in 1940 in Toronto. After joining the 1st Battalion in England he was assigned to the Pioneer Platoon. He remained in England as a replacement officer when the battalion sailed for Italy in June 1943, rejoining the battalion in Italy on 14 November 1943 in the area of Campobasso as part of Operation Pouch which returned some officers from Italy to England for further courses.
