The Commanding Officer 48th Highlanders of Canada 1955 – 1958
Major Hamish K. Macintosh, M.B.E., E.D., was a son of Mr & Mrs John F Hendry.
He attended Ridley College in St Catherines 1936 – 1939. He was an avid athlete and played hockey , football and cricket and was a school ‘“Prefect” in 1938 – Appointment to Ridley College Air Cadet Squadron- No 3 Flight, Flight-Lieut 1961 – President of the Ridley College Association.
It’s reasonable to assume he joined the Reserves (likely the Highlanders) right out of school, just before Canada entered WWII in 1939. By wartime, he’d transferred (or been “seconded”) to the Canadian Intelligence Corps, which was common for officer-cadets with strong academic or language skills.
Maj MacIntosh was promoted to the command of the 48th Highlanders in 1955. He had joined the 48th Highlanders in the early months in England and had then alternated staff and regimental service. He landed in Sicily serving as the Brigade Intelligence officer. He rejoined the Regiment on 16 Oct 1943 as second in command of Able Company. After commanding Able Company in the capture of San Tommaso and San Nicola, he again held important staff appointments with distinction.
He married Mary Catherine McPherson on March 29 1944 in St Andrew’s Church, Toronto likely on leave between deployments.
