Commanding Officer 2024 –
LCol Tyler Wentzell was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and grew up mostly in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2002 through the Regular Officer Training Program. After graduating from the Royal Military College in 2006 with a degree in history, he commissioned into the Third Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, where he served as a platoon commander and battalion training officer.
In 2008, he deployed to Afghanistan as an Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team leader for a Reconnaissance Company of the Afghan National Army.
After two years as an Observer Controller Trainer at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, he transferred to the 48th Highlanders of Canada in 2011 where he has served as a company second in command, a company commander, the deputy commanding officer of the 48th and the 32 Canadian Brigade Group Battle School, and the commander of a domestic operation in Toronto in 2018.
He has completed the Basic Parachutist, Information Operations, Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Defence Officer, and Joint Command and Staff Programme courses. He has a law degree from the University of Toronto and a masters in war studies from the Royal Military College. He has taught on the Joint Command and Staff Programme at the Canadian Forces College in various capacities since 2018.
In his civilian life, he is a student of military law and history and is completing his doctoral degree at the University of Toronto. He is married to Dr. Carly Ng and they are parents to Henry.
