LCol George MacKenzie Alexander, MC, (MID), VD

Officer Commanding No 2 Company – 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada)    Prisoner of War

He was born May 1, 1886 and was educated at Upper Canada College.

He was enrolled in the 15th Bn as a Captain on 20 September 1914 in Valcartier. He stated his previous military service included three years in the QOR and 9 years in the 48th Highlanders.

Capt Alexander was in command of No 2 company when he was taken prisoner 24 April 1915 near St Julien during the gas attack at the 2nd battle of Ypres. He was mentioned in dispatches by Sir John French June 22, 1915.

He was repatriated 18 November 1918 and promoted Major 6 December 1918.

Father was James MacKenzie Alexander who was President of the S. F. McKinnon Company (Wholesale dry goods). Capt Alexander worked for his father.

George died in January 14 1966 aged 81 and he is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
