    Robert Gibson “Bob” Darling was born in Toronto. He was a third generation Highlander and the son of Lieutenant Colonel WWG Darling, DSO, ED who commanded both the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards during the Second World War and the 48th Highlanders following the War. In 1959 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 48th Highlanders of Canada. From 1960-62 he was attached to the Seaforth Highlanders in Canada. Returning to Toronto in May 1962 he went on to serve as Adjutant (1964-67) and was serving as Deputy Commanding Officer (DCO) in 1973 when his employer moved him to Hamilton. In September 1974 he was appointed DCO of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princes Louise’s) and served as its Commanding Officer from 1975-1977 when he retired. He returned to serve as Honorary Colonel of the 48th Highlanders from 2004-2007. His proudest moment came when he was informed that his daughter Sasha had been selected for the appointment of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel (and later Colonel) of the 48th Highlanders of Canada.

Bob graduated from University of Toronto Schools and attended University of British Columbia. On graduation he joined National Trust serving in various positions until in 1973 he was appointed Assistant Vice President and transferred to Hamilton. In 1977 he joined Investors Group and moved to Winnipeg where he eventually rose to be Vice-President Investments. On retirement he remained in Winnipeg where he was active in a number philanthropic projects including 78th Frasers Highlanders where he served as Commander York Garrison.
