Colonel McEwen joined the 48th Highlanders in 1992 as a private while studying at York University and commenced training at CFB Borden that year. In 1993 he was selected for Officer Training and continued his training at CFB Gagetown. After completing Infantry Officer training and a degree in Economics, he joined the staff at Toronto District Headquarters and then transferred to 25 Service Battalion as their Operations Officer, leaving that unit in 1998 as Adjutant. Within the 48th Highlanders Colonel McEwen held every command appointment including Platoon Commander and Company Commander of all three companies, Deputy Commanding Officer in 2005 and Commanding Officer from 2009 to 2011. Colonel McEwen is a graduate of the Army Staff College in Kingston and the Joint Command and Staff Program in Toronto.  In 2006, LCol McEwan served in Sierra Leone on OP SCULPTURE as a Military Training Advisor to the Royal Sierra Leone Armed Forces before returning to his position as DCO. He deployed to Kabul with NTM-A as a Senior Advisor to the Afghan Ministry of Defence. In 2011, he was the Battle Group Commanding Officer for MAPLE DEFENDER in Wainwright, AB. Prior to his appointment as Brigade Commander he held the position of Deputy Director.
