A 15 inch by 11.5 inch wooden framed battle map showing the position of the 1st Canadian Division in the front of Ypres on April 22, 1915. The 15th Bn was one of the forward Bns. of 3rd Canadian Brigade when the Germans unleashed in the late afternoon their first gas attack. The Bn. had #1 Company (Capt. A.R. McGregor), number 3 Company (Capt. G.H. McLaren), number 4 Company (Major J.E. Osborne), in the front line with #2 Company (Capt.G. Alexander) taking up a position in and around the village of St. Julien.
The casualties were heavy and between April 19th and May 4th the Regiment lost 20 officers and 651 other ranks. Less than 200 men out of a total 912 effectives answered the Roll Call after the battle.
Sir John French’s Special Order of the Day had this to say: “In spite of the danger to which they were exposed the Canadians held their ground with a magnificent display of courage; and it is not too much to say that the bearing and conduct of these splendid troops adverted a disaster which might have been attended with the most serious consequences.”
