The 15th Bn detraining at Exhibition camp, Toronto – 1919

The 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders) detraining at Exhibition Camp, Toronto, Toronto 1919 in WW1.

Most of the men who enrolled and left Toronto on 29 August 1914 were not the men who returned almost five years later. A gallant, and lucky few had survived all the years of merciless pounding of artillery in the trenches and the punishing sweep of the machine gun in the open. But those that joined them later were no less gallant. Each had been in the trenches and had made the naked assaults. Each had met the same challenge to their humanity and each had survived.

The war time establishment for the 15th Battalion was 1,170 men. 1,467 Highlanders were killed in action, 61 officers and 1,406 non-commissioned officers and men.
