Pte O´Brien, Melvin: Brassards, 48th Highlanders, 1st Div., WW2

A set of brassards (arm bands) worn around the upper arm displaying the 48th Highlanders unit flash over top of the red rectangle of the First Canadian Infantry Division.

The brassard is made of a khaki Sanforized cotton fabric and has an opening at the top to allow a shoulder strap to pass through it. Stitched to the bottom of the brassard is a band of the same fabric that would slip of the sleeve and hold the brassard in place.

Both of the badges are made of a stiffer, cotton fabric and are machine sewn to the brassard.

The unit flash is navy blue, with 48th Highlanders of Canada printed in red.

The 1st Canadian Infantry Division patch is red.

The brassard measures, top to bottom: 16cm, side to side: 12.5cm. There is a slight inward taper at the top, starting approximately 4.5 cm from the top. The width adjacent to the shoulder strap hole is 10.5 cm. The shoulder strap hole is 6 cm in width. The top most edge of the brassard is 8 cm. The shoulder strap hole is 1 cm wide.

The 48th Highlander unit flash is 10.5 cm at its widest and 3 cm at its tallest.

The 1st Canadian Division patch is regulation 7 cm by 4.5cm (2×3 inches).
