Early model, pre-1900, gray steel bayonet with dark brown wood handle for the Dutch M.95 rifle, a Dutch commission and variation of the Mannlicher 1895. The hooked quillon on the bayonet was dropped from the design in 1900. The maker’s stamp is OE WG, which stands for: Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft (Austrian Weapon Manufacturing Company), used by the Steyr weapons manufacturer in Austria. The Dutch initially purchased the rifle directly from Steyr from 1895-1904, until switching to production within the Netherlands, at which point the manufacturer’s stamp also changed. The inspector’s mark, a crowned “T”, is stamped on the base of the blade and on the pommel. Serial numbers are stamped on both sides of the hilt reading: “6239 C” and “LD 20 4767”.
Pte Carey served with the 48th Highlanders in Europe, including in the Netherlands campaign, in WW2 and likely acquired this bayonet during that time.
