Piper Roddie, 48th Highlanders playing pipes on jeep for Italians in Campobasso, Italy

Piper Roderick Grant playing pipes in Campobasso, Italy – Oct 1943

The attraction of pipes is universal. Sitting on kitbags with submachine gun packed but at hand, Piper Roderick Grant takes a personal music break. A throng of townspeople from Campobasso in central Italy is the inevitable result. The date is likely the third week in October 1943 as Campobasso had fallen on 14 October and the 48th Highlanders departed to clear the town of Torella on 26 October.
