Service: 48th Highlanders 1891 – 1915 and 1916 – 1918; Commanding Officer 134th Battalion C.E.F. (48th Highlanders) – 1915 – 1916

In the 48th Highlanders of Canada it is the custom that all Field Officers (Company Commander, usually a Major) or higher have a Pipe Banner that is carried by their Piper on parade. It is tied by ribbons to the base drone of a set of bagpipes.   On the obverse side the Regimental Badge is displayed, normally on a field of Royal Blue (Lt. Col. Donald elected to use khaki to indicate his service  during WWI). On the reverse the personal arms of the Officer is displayed. When not on parade Pipe Banners are hung in the Officers’ Mess. This banner is one of four but the only one to use the motto Pro Rege et Patria. The others have the motto Toujour Pret. It is not clear if this is a change to correct the mottos on prior banners.
