An undress leather sporran belonging to Major John Eardley Wilmot Wright D.S.0. . The sporran has a 48th Highlanders cap badge, lozenge design, in the centre of the closing flap. The lozenge design pattern of the badge was issued in 1939 in response to a Department of Defence ruling that the prior buckle badge represented the buckle of the Royal Garter for which the regiment was not entitled. This ruling was overturned in the 1990s when Lord Lyon of the UK and keeper of Heraldry, stated the buckle was a Scottish buckle.
The 48th Highlanders order of dress includes two types of sporrans: an undress sporran of brown leather, and a full dress sporran of black and white horsehair. Officers and other ranks wear the same leather sporrans, which have two tassels and a regimental badge, as shown here. When in full dress, however, an officer’s horsehair sporran has three tassels, while the other ranks dress sporran retains only the two.
In most cases, the sporran is worn in front of the kilt and hangs around the waist suspended from the leather strap.
