Maitland Fuller Newman arrived as a reinforcement officer to the 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders) in October 1915 and was posted to No 4 Coy. Badly wounded during the Battle for VIMY RIDGE April 9-12, 1917 he was evacuated to the UK and back to Canada for medical treatment and convalescence.  Although not awarded Lt Newman was nominated for an award for his performance at VIMY RIDGE. The nomination and citation read:

This officer took part in the operations on April 9th south of Thelus. When the Battalion had reached the final objective, it was necessary that he advance beyond the objective and place a block in the Communication Trench.  He was met with a withering machine gun fire but with steadfast courage and the greatest fortitude he had his party block the trench.  Although he was very badly wounded himself in the lung, even after he had fallen he remained at his duty and directed his men.  The block was successful and the enemy was kept at bay until our barrage was lifted and the line advanced to a further objective.
