The area of Militello was the first rest camp for the 48th Highlanders after the completion of the battles across Sicily. Unfortunately, the green and lush farm land at Militello was the home of malarial mosquitoes and the 48th were forced to move to a barren piece of land closer to the coast at the Straits of Messina.
