There are various types of Lewis Gun magazine carriers, however, this cylindrical carrier (sometimes called a “bucket” carrier), is perhaps the most common type. It has a capacity of 3, 47-round magazines for a total capacity of 141 rounds (total weight 6.12kgs or 13.5 pounds).
These carriers are made from khaki canvas webbing material (or less frequently cotton or cotton web). They feature an adjustable carrying strap and are reinforced with internal cane or metal hoops to keep their shape. There also is a carrying strap on the bottom of the bag. The bag closes with 2 brass swivel-type fasteners.
The Lewis Gun’s rate of fire would quickly exhaust the ammunition supply on the gunner’s body. Magazine carriers such as these streamlined the reloading process by providing relatively quick access to spare magazines. The carriers also protected spare magazines from dirt and damage that could render them inoperable when most needed.
