Brown rectangular leather wallet with grid and lines pattern design on outside and single metal button clasp on fold-over flap to lock. Inside of wallet contains one smaller vertical pouch with cover flap along edge to close it, likely for coins. Two horizontal dividers, one smaller than the other, creating two horizontal pockets, likely for bills. On front of smaller horizontal divider on inside of wallet is black text, written possibly with pencil, reading: “B67091 PTE. CARNAHAN 1st.B. .C.B.R.D. .CANADA.” Black text written on underside of cover flap of small vertical pouch reads: “B.67091 PTE. L. CARNAHAN”
1CBRD stands for 1st Canadian Base Reinforcement Depot, which was an in-theatre training and holding unit during WW2 for Canadian forces in Europe and North Africa, for processing replacement of losses for units in the field. Soldiers arriving from Canada, or after recovery in hospital, could be sent to CBRD, before being reassigned to a unit as needed.
This leather wallet, while originally belonging to Pte. L. Carnahan based on the writing in the wallet, was held in possession by Pte. G.A. Jones after the war, and passed down to his family.
