The Islington Award – gold medal is for the Islington Royal Military Tournament of June 1897. A team of 10 Highlanders went to England to participate in the bayonet competition, winning first the Colonial Competition, then the Regulars versus the Colonials and finally the mixed Regulars against the 48th Highlanders making the 48th Highlanders the overall winners in the British Empire for reserve and regular troops. On return to Toronto the Islington gold medals were presented by the City of Toronto to all ten Highlanders. Pte Rankin was noted for his “brilliant work” in the competition.
