British Home Child Medallion – Pte. Thomas Moore

Bronze-coloured circle medal with the inscription “BRITISH HOME CHILD” around the edge of medal, with a smaller circle inside, and an engraved image in the middle of the medal with a flag of the United Kingdom on the left half and a maple leaf with a silhouette of a child’s head and shoulders on the right half.

British home children was a program from 1869 – 1948 created to send British children who were orphaned or from families unable to take care of them overseas to work, live, and be cared for with foster families. Over 100 000 children were brought to Canada during the length of the program and over time, the program focused mostly on labour, with many children becoming abused and worked harshly, at times in dangerous environments.
