William Wallace Southam joined the 48th Highlanders in 1922 and served with them up to Lt. Col while the battalion was in the UK. In 1942 Lt. Col. Southam was promoted to Brigadier of the 6th Brigade, 2nd Div. and was captured on the beaches at Dieppe, spending the balance of the war as a POW.
Details of the portrait and artist (G. Jesse Gledhill) are linked below. On the cover of the binder is a colour photo of the portrait in acrylic showing the Brigadier in full dress over a background of the Dieppe beach landing and this was unveiled at the officer’s Mess 48th Highlanders in Toronto on Oct 2003.
