Barbed Wire, World War 1

A length of military grade barbed wire recovered from a World War 1 battle field. This example is most likely a strand of British wire. Typically, German barbed wire had a much denser concentration of barbs.

Barbed wire served several functions:

  1. Slow down an enemy attack
  2. Make it difficult for the enemy to manoeuvre
  3. Funnel attacking troops into areas preregistered for defensive machine gun and artillery fire

While the museum is closed, our Digital Guided Tour is still open. It is the best way to explore the museum from home, with stories and context for selected displays.

You can also take our 360° Virtual Tour for a visual walk-through of the museum rooms and display cases.

We will try to respond to your email messages as soon as possible.
