Leaving Apeldoorn, Holland, 48th Highlanders of Canada with Bert Wemp (Toronto Telegram) Sgt Norm Galloway and Capt Bob Murdock Apr 19, 1945 P0598. After the liberation of Apeldoorn on 17 April 1945 the job was not finished for the 48th Highlanders. Able Company, mounted on carriers and jeeps, commanded a flying column over 90 miles to Harderwijk to chase the retreating Germans. The flying column, under command of Major George Beal consisted of A Company, plus five Sherman tanks, two recce tanks, 14 Bren gun carriers, four Vickers heavy machine guns, two anti-tank guns, a platoon of Canadian Engineers with a bulldozer, an artillery observation officer, a mortar representative with six 3” mortars, and four flame throwers.
