48th graveside ceremony on the dyke near Wilp in The Netherlands- 1995

Veterans with wreath at the site of the graves on the dyke near the town of Wilp in Holland. The 48th Highlanders who were killed in action during the crossing of the Ijssel River near Wilp and the final liberation of Apeldoorn were buried there. They were moved later to the Holten Cemetery. In the centre, to the rear, wearing a 48th Highlanders Officer’s tie and Davidson tartan vest,  is Pieter van Blockland, Burgemeister of the city of Apeldoorn which the 1st Battalion liberated in April 1945 as part of Operation Cannonshot.
